There’s no denying it anymore: the summer is over, and winter is well on its way. Which means it’s time to give your beauty routine an autumnal update. And here are 5 seasonal changes to start with…
Change Your Foundation Shade
One of the first things I do every autumn is change my foundation shade. Throughout the summer, when I have a bit of natural colour and regularly wear fake tan, I like to use Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation in #3. However, I find that shade is slightly too warm for my complexion during autumn/winter, so I switch to Chanel Perfection Lumière Foundation in 10 or 20 Beige. You can always tell when someone is wearing the wrong foundation shade, and it’s never a good look. So, although it can be a pain to switch to a lighter colour, I think it’s worth it. And you can always warm your complexion afterwards with a bronzer!
Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate
My skin becomes dry as soon as the central heating gets switched on, making regular exfoliation an essential part of my autumn/winter beauty routine. At the moment I’m using the Frank Body coconut coffee scrub, which smells delicious and is made from natural ingredients (no micro beads here). It leaves my body feeling so silky smooth – especially when you follow up with a rich body cream. And I’m also loving the Frank Body lip scrub and lip balm duo, which gently buffs away dry skin and protects against further chapping.
Switch Your Daily Moisturiser
Eagle-eyed followers will know that I’d been using the Dr Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Moisture Cushion moisturiser throughout the summer, which I absolutely adore. However, now that there’s a chill in the air and central heating is being cranked up, I’m in need of something a little richer. So I’m currently using Perricone MD Oil Free Hydrating Cream. And once the cold-snap sets in I’ll return to Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream – it’s one of my favourite formulas, but I find too heavy for spring/summer. If you want a clear, healthy complexion it’s so important to cater to your skin’s changing needs. And it will tell you exactly what it wants!
Load Up On Rich Berry Tones
It may be a cliché, but you simply can’t beat a beautiful berry lipstick during autumn/winter. And the same can be said for rich, burgundy nail polish. This fall, when it comes to lip colour, I’m favouring Chanel La Romanesque Rouge Allure Velvet [pictured], which is a satin-finish magenta, and Tom Ford Plum Lush Lip Colour Matte, which is a raspberry red. Both provide long-lasting colour, but leave lips feeling a little dry by the end of the day. So Frank Body’s lip scrub once again saves the day.
Start Taking Vitamin Supplements
According to health officials, everyone in the UK should take vitamin D supplements throughout the autumn and winter months, because we don’t get enough sunlight and it’s difficult to reach the recommended daily intake from food sources alone. Low vitamin D levels can lead to a number of health problems, so it’s worth checking in with your GP to see if you could benefit from daily supplements. And, along with vitamin D, I also take vitamin C and zinc throughout autumn/winter to keep my immune system strong. I stick to a healthy diet, but still find this added boost helps to keep winter colds at bay.
